U.S. Airwaves Bleeding for Leona! April 1, 2008
Posted by John C in Leona Lewis, music.trackback
The amazing run of Leona Lewis‘ hit single “Bleeding Love” continues here in America. After hitting #1 on FOUR different Billboard charts last week, “Bleeding Love” has now launched a full-fledged assault on the #1 spot on the U.S. pop radio airwaves! There’s lots of fierce competition on the pop radio airplay charts, but as you’ll see, Leona and her smash hit (currently #10 on the Mediabase Top 40 pop chart) seem to definitely be up to the challenge!!!

For those of you that aren’t familiar with the charts, the main number you need to pay attention to is the 1417 in the next to last column. That’s the number of spins “Bleeding Love” has picked up on the U.S. pop radio airwaves over the past week. Yes, Leona’s picking up on average over 200 spins a day! Today alone, it picked up an incredible 237 spins! To make a long story short, “Bleeding Love” is the hottest song on the pop chart at the moment as the Mediabase “Jump” chart clearly shows:
Rk ARTIST Title Move
1.LEONA LEWIS Bleeding Love +1417
2.MADONNA 4 Minutes +1290
3.JORDIN SPARKS No Air (f/Chris Brown) +887
4.USHER Love In This Club f/Y. Jeezy +883
5.RAY J/YUNG BERG Sexy Can I +877
Yes, “Bleeding Love” is growing at an even faster rate than the much-anticipated new Madonna release, “4 Minutes” and every other song out at the moment!!! At it’s current rate of growth, it could very well reach #7 on the big chart by this weekend! “Bleeding Love” is all but assured of a top 5 peak, but it’s looking more and more like there’s just about nothing left to stop this classic song from hitting #1 on the U.S. Pop radio airplay charts! Perhaps as soon as the end of this month, Leona Lewis will have a #1 U.S. Pop airplay crown to add to her ever-growing mantle!
And a week from today, Leona’s debut album Spirit will be released for all of America to enjoy. I get the feeling that “Bleeding Love” is just the tip of the iceberg so to speak in terms of Leona’s potential here in the U.S. and globally!
yeay!
am so happy for leona!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought she was number 1 on FIVE billboard charts? Hot, Pop, Download, Canadian, European? And obv world one is seperate..?
I was actually just talking about the U.S. Billboard charts: Pop 100, Hot 100, Hot Digital Tracks and Hot Digital Songs.
John
Oh ok thats great! Sorry, I get confused with these charts (I’m not american myself I’m from england so yeah…) Brilliant ! So i presume on the artist history on billboard they dont put european and canadian because its nothing do with U.S.? Rightio! Brilliant article – read them all for catch up with leona. MAYBE she has a chance of being number 1 again but i’m unsure.
Hopefully if she gets number 1 pop airplay and number 1 downloads from iTunes then that gets her a number 1 maybe ?
She’s amazingggg!
The best artist around atm. And that’s THE best artist!
Why do you pay so much emphasis to the pop airplay charts?
Joe:
I pay attention to the pop airplay charts because they are supposed to represent what songs are truly popular in the U.S. Usually, they paint a pretty accurate picture, though at the moment, I suspect two songs currently in the top 10 are receiving some payola.
I pay even more attention to the pop call-out scores charts than the airplay charts as they tend to weed out the songs that may be getting payolaed up the charts. Songs scoring over 3.90 consistently in their early charts life are usually REALLY BIG hits, while those scoring below 3.40 consistently in their early chart life tend to be flops. When songs score below 3.40 in the early going (such as the two songs I suspect), yet continue to gain spins on the pop airplay charts, that’s when the red warning flags and signs tend to go up.
Adam:
I wholeheartedly agree she’s AMAZING! I also think Leona’s definitely the best new artist out there at the moment. It’s pretty nice that we’ve been blessed with her voice and music and that of Carrie Underwood’s the past several years and both were discovered thru reality shows!!! Hopefully, they will keep putting out quality songs for decades to come!
But not all music is pop there are other genres so surely these charts count also??
Joe:
There are separate charts for those formats. I cover Country and Hot AC music a lot as well here. The reason that the pop chart is the most important to most of us is that it’s the “melting pot” for all types and formats of music. In other words it covers what is POPular, regardless of genre at the time. You can have something from Country charting there like Taylor Swift or Carrie Underwood, new-age stuff like Norah Jones, R&B stuff like Alicia Keys or Usher, rock groups like Matchbox 20 and Nickelback, Christian groups like Switchfoot and Lifehouse to straight ahead pop acts such as Madonna and Natasha Bedingfield. There is no other format that comes close to playing songs from so many diverse formats.
yey! Leona is really making big waves there in America. Hope she’ll release her 2 new songs here in Britain.
